Solution Focused Therapy

Solution Focused Therapy is a form of counseling aimed at utilising the client's strong suits and resources. With the therapist, the client explores the skills they possess with which they can tackle their problems. Solution Focused Therapy is a short term and results-oriented form of therapy.

Solution Focused Therapy has been developed by De Shazer, Berg et al., from the Brief Family Therapy Center at Palo Alto in the USA.

Solution Focused Therapy is a method aiming to support and strengthen the client's autonomy, with an emphasis on finding solutions rather than on the source of these problems. The therapist stimulates the client to envision a future where the problem is resolved.

The basic premises is that it is not always necessary to understand what has been causing a problem in order to solve it. Therefore this therapy focuses on solutions. The client is the expert.

The therapist assumes a role of not-knowing and leads from behind. By asking solution-oriented questions the therapist looks over the client's shoulder and invites them to set their goal and to explore as wide a range of solutions as possible.

During the initial session the client will formulate their goal, preferably defined in positive, specific  and manageable terms. The therapist helps the client to gain insight into what should come in place if the problem at hand. Very helpful can be the Miracle Question. It says : "Imagine that tonight as you sleep a miracle happens. The miracle solves all the problems that brought you here. You don't know this happens as you are asleep. What would, the following morning, be the first sign you notice that all your troubles are gone?"

There are also always situations in which the problem does not occur even though one expects it to. Clients often overlook these situations or disregard them as unimportant. The therapist is tasked with highlighting these exceptional situations because they serve as starting points for finding a solution.

A core characteristic of Solution Focused Therapy  is the faith and confidence the therapist places in the client's abilities and opportunities to effect positive change themselves.

The client's competencies and strong suits are emphasized and deployed to learn new behavior.
